women in street art

As a society, we stereotypically think of street artists as men not women, which is why we need to increase the visibility of female street artists and the talent they hold.

Graffiti art is being increasingly taken over by women and girls are literally leaving their mark in the public sphere.

inspirational female street artists

Miss Van

The artist, Miss Van, started wall painting in Toulouse, France, in 1993 where she initiated the feminine movement in street art as it was perceived as a breath of fresh air in the traditionally masculine movement of urban art.

She is known for her recognisable female characters, 'poupées', that are described as more dolls than women, having a contrasting angelic, yet devilish appearance.

academic take on women in street art

Street art is something which is really important and now with the whole women issues and other issues which people want to talk about, I think it is a very good place for artist to come and talk about it with the community,
Digital/social media and internet use have established a visible presence for women and a space for female solidarity in graffiti subculture where those of the minority genders can share common experiences. Moreover the digital and social media has increased the ways of being seen, as women among street art and graffiti do not present a unified gender but diverse identities.
